Adding a Site

Knowing what sites belong here and which do not is highly subjective. And since it is quite subjective, I understand that bringing a site to my attention to add here can be confusing or daunting. Because of that, this page is intended to let you know what sites are appropriate for inclusion here. That, or it's here to confuse you even more.

When I come across a site and one of these thoughts crosses my mind (or makes me say out loud - and hopefully I'm alone when that happens) it's a good candidate for inclusion:

  • "Wow. I didn't know Such-N-Such system could do that!" or
  • "That's a great use of Such-N-Such system!" or
  • "I never thought Such-N-Such system could look that good!" or
  • "Such-N-Such system was never intended for that!"

Basically, the site has to go beyond what the system was intended for, or use the system to its full potential. Make sure you look through some of the showcased sites here to get an idea of what fits the requirements.

Types of Sites

The requirements are as follows:

  • Open Source system. Drupal or Joomla! sites, for example, are good candidates, but Subdreamer isn't.
  • php and mysql systems prefered. Rails... maybe.
  • It goes beyond its default configuration. If it's a Xoops site, for example, it should function differently than a base install of Xoops and be different from most other Xoops sites.

So a newspaper site using Drupal would fit in, as would a magazine site using FuzzyLime, but a personal blog using WordPress with the default theme wouldn't.

And there are a few things that are not appropriate.

  • Adult Content. No adult sites will be listed. Exceptions will be made for artistic nudes. Feel free to ask about specific sites.
  • Link farms. Sites that are simply link farms will be declined.
  • Spam sites. Sites whose purpose is Spamish in nature will be declined. These include, but not limited to, pharmaceuticals, gambling, or money scams.
  • Illegal Content.

  • How to Add a Site

There are three ways to get a site listed. (Four, actually, but my mind reading capabilities aren't that great.)

The first is to send me an email through my contact form. Fill in your info, select "Add my Site" in the category select box, and in the body put in the web address of the site and any information about it, including why it should be included.

Another method is to create a forum topic. Again, give the web address of the site and any other information about it. (This does require a user account.)

The third method, and the most self-serve way, is to create the Showcase page yourself. When you're logged in, click on "Create content" in the "Navigation" menu in the side bar, then click on Showcase.

In the title field, type in the site's name (not necessarily the web address.) In the Showcase text box, add tags that describe the site. Make sure to at lease enter the system that's used. For example, if it's a Xaraya site that has articles on personal finance with a community message board, you could enter xaraya, finance, community. In the body, place the URL of the site and a description of what makes it great. (Using Xaraya, SuchAndSuch Site provides articles related to personal finance that multiple authors contribute to, as well as an active community through Xaraya's built-in forum system.)

If you have a thumbnail image of the site, you can attach it. (Please try to keep the image width to 250px to 300px and the size below 30kb.)

    Click Submit.

Please note that all Showcase sites are moderated. None will appear live on the site until I review them. I also reserve the right to edit the description, title, tags, etc. (Anal, maybe. But this ain't no linkfarm!)

If you need help, feel free to ask questions in the forum.
